Episode 47: Bobby & Julia Dean [Part One]

Today’s episode is part one of a special 2-part series focused on bringing you practical tips and advice for structuring and growing a business or non-profit. I know so many artists who have started their own small businesses or non-profit organizations and many who have a dream to start one someday! Joining me to share their expertise in the areas of business, non-profit work, and fundraising, are my amazing parents Bobby and Julia Dean!

In part one of this series, we hear from my mom Julia Dean about the process of setting up a business. Julia is an attorney who specializes in the areas of Estate Planning, Probate, Guardianships, and Civil Appeals. She has helped many clients structure their businesses ensuring protections are in place to limit their liability. Julia specifically helps explain what goes into creating a Limited Liability Company (LLC) and helps break down what can feel like an overwhelming topic. In the second part of this series, which will go live next week, Bobby Dean shares tips for fundraising from his experience as a fundraiser for multiple non-profit organizations. Be sure to check out next week’s episode for some practical advice on developing positive relationships with donors and growing your non-profit!

About Bobby & Julia:

Bobby began his fundraising career in 1992 at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch and has been blessed to be able to enjoy every aspect of fundraising including leading teams of professional fundraisers. A couple of years after moving to Sugar Land, Texas in 2004, Bobby went to work for Houston Grand Opera in their fundraising department and in 2011 began his career at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center which is where he is still fundraising.

Early in Bobby’s career he was a bi-vocational youth pastor and served several churches for over 20 years. During these years, he also raised funds to help pay the costs of camps, retreats, ski trips and many other activities. Even before this was his chosen profession, he was a fundraiser at heart.

There have been several challenging times in Bobby’s career including the market collapse after 9/11, the housing bubble collapse in 2008-2009 and the pandemic of 2020-2021. While challenging, donors have always stepped up to make sure that the organizations that they are passionate about will survive these difficulties.

Julia Dean is the Managing Attorney at The Dean Law Firm, PLLC, a boutique estate planning, probate and elder law firm.  Julia has been practicing law for 30 years and opened her own law firm 14 years ago because she wanted clients to experience a different kind of law firm.  She has cultivated a team whose mission it is to provide excellence within an environment of empathy and concern for others. Before opening The Dean Law Firm, Julia’s professional experience encompassed a broad range of legal matters including commercial litigation, civil appeals, corporate mergers and other business matters.  She found her passion, however, helping others proactively plan and orchestrate their estates, integrating legacy planning, asset protection planning, tax planning, disability planning, charitable planning and small business formation and planning. Julia has been regularly recognized by her colleagues and clients in numerous awards for excellence in her profession and for superior client service.

Between them, Bobby and Julia have four children, Tyler, Katie, Bethany and Rachel and three grandchildren.
