Episode 67: Kathleen Schuler
My guest for episode 67 is my friend Kathleen Schuler, the director of Störling Conservatory in Kansas. After receiving her B.F.A. in Dance from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS, Kathleen danced for two seasons as a company member with Störling Dance Theater. Following her time with the company, she has continued teaching and choreographing in a variety of settings.
For 8 years Kathleen directed a trainee style dance program for Störling Dance Theater (Störling’s Artist Development Program or ADP) before Störling Conservatory was established in partnership with Visible Music College. I loved learning about Störling Conservatory, which is a Conservatory style Bachelor of Arts in Dance degree for Visible Music College. Störling Conservatory of Dance has 3 concentrations: Performance, Choreography, and Dance Ministry, and a 1 year certificate in dance.
A thread that goes through our whole conversation is the idea of dreaming big dreams and realizing that God is a God of big dreams. I love Kathleen’s encouragement, “Why not you? Why not now?” You are sure to be inspired by Kathleen’s journey!
About Kathleen:
Kathleen Schuler is the director of Störling Conservatory in Olathe, Kansas. Störling Conservatory of Dance is the dance department for Visible Music College in residence with Störling Dance Theater at The Culture House. Kathleen received a B.F.A. in Dance from Belhaven University in Jackson, MS (2009) then danced for 2 seasons as a company member with Störling Dance Theater. Since then she spent 2 years as the dance teacher at Notre Dame de Sion High School, developing a dance curriculum to use for P.E. credit. She also taught dance for various studios around the Kansas City area, choreographed and directed 2 original dance productions, choreographed 6 musicals, and co-directed/produced 4 community arts concerts collaborating with visual artists, musicians, and dancers. While traveling in Europe, Kathleen had the privilege to teach master classes in Rome, Italy; Champagne, France; and Jerusalem, Israel. Kathleen has also had the pleasure of choreographing and performing for Youth With A Mission in Paris, France for 5 summers. In 2015 one of her dreams came true as she was able to assist in producing the first Project Dance Paris, which had been a dream of hers for many years.
For 8 years Kathleen directed a trainee style dance program for Störling Dance Theater (Störling’s Artist Development Program or ADP) before Störling Conservatory was established in partnership with Visible Music College. ADP was designed for dancers to discover the artist they are created to be and to experience professional training in dance performance and production. In 2020 Kathleen had the opportunity to develop a Conservatory style Bachelor or Arts in Dance degree for Visible Music College. Störling Conservatory of Dance has 3 concentrations: Performance, Choreography, and Dance Ministry, and a 1 year certificate in dance. For the past 11 years as a director, it has been a blessing to dream with other artists to develop new programs and opportunities for dancers to receive advanced professional training with a Christian worldview. Kathleen is currently working with Visible to develop a 1 year certificate in Musical Theater, a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theater, and a Master of Arts in Dance.
