Episode 26: Meggie Belisle

My conversation with Meggie Belisle today for episode 26 begins our “Family Christmas” series of episodes! Meggie and I are (basically) related, although I’ll let you listen to the episode to find out the details. We first met while studying dance at Belhaven University, and I am so thankful for her friendship over the years. Meggie is a professional dancer, choreographer, and founder of Mei/Co. Dance.

Meggie shares her journey dancing with a variety of companies in Texas, New York, and New Jersey, including Ingredients Dance Company, Roxey Ballet, Ad Deum Dance Company, and Open Sky Arts Collective. We chat about the value of community, the challenge and beauty of taking a fresh look at our beliefs, and how to have better conversations.

In 2015, Meggie founded Mei/Co. Dance to promote the art of listening through the creative art of dance. Inspired by her mom’s cancer journey, Meggie’s hope is to help bring healing to the hurting through the beauty of movement. Mei/Co. Dance shares stories that inspire, honor, and bring healing to all involved. I love how Meggie expresses, “Your story is unique and needs to be heard.”

She has danced with Ingredients Dance Company in Texas (2008-2010), Arise Dance Company in the The Netherlands and England (2012), Roxey Ballet in New Jersey (2013-2014), and during her time in New York she worked with The Next Stage Project (2014-2015), Awakening Movement (2014-2016), Atmosphere (2017). After returning to Texas in 2017, she danced with Ad Deum (2017-2019), Open Sky Arts Collective (2019), and established a new home for her dance company Mei/Co. Dance.

Meggie has also choreographed for and performed in the music videos Trace the Lines by Lizi Bailey and Summertime Anytime by Dannah. Other choreographic credits include works for Talitha Dance Company and You Are Conference in Texas (2008-current), Freedom Benefit Concerts in Texas (2009), Arise Dance Company European Tour throughout the The Netherlands and England (2012), HATCH showcase in New York (2016), Amalgamate Artist Series in New York (2016), and more.

Meggie graduated from Belhaven University with a BFA in modern dance in 2013. Because she strongly values solid professional dance training and education, Meggie founded the KDA Pre-Professional program in Poughkeepsie, NY and was the program’s director for the 2016-2017 season.

In 2015, Meggie founded Mei/Co. Dance with the assistance of her amazing husband and wonderful mom. From 2015-2017 the company was based in NY and functioned on a project basis. After relocating to Texas, the company found a new home and began making long term plans to establish itself as a full time company. This year the company continues to function on a project basis while also maintaining a core group for weekly rehearsals. Meggie’s deepest heart desire is to promote the art of listening through the creative art of dance in hopes of bringing healing to the hurting through the beauty of movement.
